SHSU/HMH Residency Program

SHSU-COM & Huntsville Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency

Welcome to the Future of Rural Healthcare

The Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM), in partnership with Huntsville Memorial Hospital (HMH), offers an ACGME-accredited, 3-year Family Medicine Residency program. Immersed in the heart of East Texas, our program is intentionally designed to train compassionate, highly skilled, and practice-ready physicians dedicated to serving rural and medically underserved populations.

As an unopposed program, our residents receive full-spectrum, hands-on clinical volume and direct specialist mentorship from day one.

About the Partnership

Huntsville Memorial Hospital (HMH)

Founded in 1927, Huntsville Memorial Hospital is a 123-bed, CIHQ-accredited, non-profit acute care community hospital. Serving as the healthcare cornerstone for over 82,000 residents across Walker County and surrounding areas, HMH provides full-spectrum clinical care—ranging from emergency medicine and critical care to robust outpatient services.

Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC)

Housed within SHSU-COM, SHREC serves as our institutional sponsor. This partnership bridges the gap between community-based clinical practice and cutting-edge academic medicine, ensuring residents have access to top-tier simulation labs, extensive research initiatives, and academic faculty.

Why Choose Our Program?

  • Unopposed Training: As the only residency program at HMH, you won’t compete with other specialties for procedures, lines, or deliveries. Your education is our sole priority.

  • Hands-on Rural Care: Deliver continuity care at the Huntsville Rural Health Clinic, managing a high volume of diverse pathology (over 13,000 annual patient visits).

  • Unique Correctional Medicine: Gain an unmatched perspective on complex healthcare systems by rotating through the hospital’s secure Correctional Care Unit (CCU), managing care for incarcerated patients in collaboration with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).

  • Sports Medicine: Provide medical coverage for Sam Houston State University Bearkat athletics (NCAA Division I football, basketball, and soccer) and regional community events.

Curriculum & Clinical Rotations

Our curriculum aligns with the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) blueprint and utilizes the continuously updated Decker Med Family Medicine Weekly Curriculumâ„¢.
