Speech Therapy

The Speech Therapy program at Huntsville Memorial Hospital provides patients with evaluation and treatment to improve spoken and written language, cognition, voice, articulation, fluency and swallowing for children and adults who experience disabilities resulting from illness, injury or delayed development.

A licensed Speech and Language Pathologist evaluates each patient’s condition and develops an individual treatment plan to restore communication and/or swallowing functions. Assistive communication devices may be used in conjunction with traditional strategies as well.

Speech therapy is for patients who:

  • Have autism
  • Have voice (or resonance) disorders
  • Have fluency disorders (like stuttering)
  • Have suffered a mouth/ jaw/ tongue injury
  • Have cognitive/ communication disorders

Speech Therapy & Children

Speech therapy is often necessary for children with a speech disorder or development disability like autism. Our friendly and compassionate staff is sensitive to needs and concerns of these young patients and are committed to providing an accepting, low-stress environment where children can learn and thrive.

Physical Therapy

The outpatient physical therapy department provides treatment for acute and chronic physical conditions. Our hospital may prescribe physical therapy for patients who have suffered an injury, are recovering from surgery, or who have an illness that is affecting their mobility or independence.

Our goal is to partner with these patients and ensure that they receive the guidance and support they need to make the fullest recovery possible from their medical issue.

Why do I need physical therapy?

Physical therapy has proven to be effective in helping patients recover from stroke, surgery, sports injuries, cardiovascular issues, post-partum conditions, and even in managing age-related health concerns. Whatever challenges our patients might be facing, our comprehensive outpatient physical therapy programs address patients’ issues and ensure they are given a path back to healthier, more active lifestyle.

Physical therapy goals are unique to each patient. Our licensed and highly experienced physical therapists first evaluate each patient’s condition and then use modern equipment and advanced techniques in therapeutic exercise to achieve treatment goals set by the patient and the physical therapy team.

Some of the benefits of physical therapy can include:

  • Increased mobility
  • Strengthened weakened muscles
  • Reduced pain
  • Improved coordination and balance
  • Avoiding invasive treatments (like surgery)
Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapy program provides specialized training, including exercise, fine motor tasks, and living skills to help patients return to their previous level of independence.

Unlike other forms of rehabilitation, occupational therapy focuses specifically on the independent living activities patients will need to in their day-to-day lives in order to care for themselves, meet important responsibilities, and enjoy their free time.

Understanding occupational therapy

Our therapists will work with our patients to tailor their therapy to their specific needs and individual progress. Patient learn how to compensate for disabilities or limitations using use special equipment and techniques.

Occupational therapy can include:

  • Hand therapy
  • Custom orthotics
  • Pediatric rehabilitation
  • Swallowing evaluation
  • Driving evaluation
  • Toileting

No two patients are alike and our therapists will develop individual goals. In many cases, we even work with patients to help them return to the hobbies and vocations they enjoyed before their medical issue—or help them find new ones. Whatever the case may be, our patients can count on dedicated, compassionate care from our occupational therapists as they strive to return to better, healthier lives.
