HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENT
These inpatient surgical procedures involve removing parts of a damaged joint and replacing it with a metal, plastic or ceramic material.
A total knee replacement procedure replaces damaged cartilage with new components to create a new smooth cushion and functioning joint.
A total hip replacement removes the arthritic ball of the upper thigh bone as well as damaged cartilage inside the hip socket. They are replaced them with a metal ball that is secured to the thigh bone and an artificial socket that is implanted into the pelvis.
Physical therapy is needed following joint replacement surgery.
