Chief Executive Officer

Patrick J. Shannon, FACHE, is Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. He joined HMH from Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas (BHSET), Beaumont, Texas, where he served as Chief Operating Officer. His other prior executive roles include: Chief Operating Officer for Ochsner Medical Center, Kenner, LA for three years; Vice President of Surgical Services, Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans, LA for five years; and Administrator at HCA’s Surgical Center of El Paso and East El Paso Surgery Center, El Paso, TX. He holds a Master of Science, Health Services Administration, St. Francis University, Joliet, IL, a Master of Business Administration (Healthcare concentration) from Northeast Louisiana University, Monroe, LA, and a Bachelor of General Studies, from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. His military career  includes Deputy Commanding Officer (Colonel), 3rd Medical Training Brigade, Fort Sam Houston, TX (since February 2015).

Ian Gibson serves HMH as Chief Operating Officer. He joined the hospital from Nacogdoches Medical Center, Nacogdoches, Texas, where he served as Associate Administrator since April 2021, overseeing operations of several departments. He previously served as Physician Development Manager for Centennial Medical Center in Frisco, Texas, developing physician relations, referrals, and growing the primary care footprint for the hospital. Ian has 13 years of healthcare experience. He holds both a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Masters of Business Administration from Baylor University. He enjoys being active in the local community and looks forward to settling in East Texas.

Chief Nursing Officer

Jose Guerra, MSN, RN, CRRN, CMSRN, NEA-BC, serves as Chief Nursing Officer of HMH. He is committed to clinical excellence, compassionate care, and patient safety. He joined HMH with nearly five years of CNO experience from Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a for-profit 60 licensed bed acute rehab hospital in Houston, where he had the oversight of more than 100 clinicians and several areas of clinical operations. Prior to Encompass, Guerra served as Administrative Director of Nursing for five years with Tomball Regional Hospital, a for-profit 350-bed CHS hospital. Guerra holds a master’s degree in nursing leadership and administration of health care systems from Excelsior College. In addition, he is certified in medical-surgical, rehabilitation nursing, and Nurse Executive leadership. He enjoys traveling golf, and spending time with his wife and three teenagers.

Mary Bevier, CFO, has more than 20 years of experience as a healthcare finance leader focused on financial stability, operational efficiencies and process improvements for sustainability and long-term success. She recently served as Interim CFO at Franklin Foundation Hospital, Franklin, LA and prior as CFO for Rehoboth McKinley Christian Healthcare Services, Gallup, NM. She has also served at a variety of healthcare facilities and systems, including Ardent Health Services in Roswell, NM; Carondelet Health Network in Tucson, AZ; CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, NM; and Mercy Hospital in Tiffin, OH. Bevier earned a bachelor of arts in both business and accounting from Bluffton University, Bluffton, OH, and a master’s degree at Western Governors University. She has a public accountant certification from her home state of Ohio. She and her husband Brian have one daughter and two granddaughters. She enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Ray Hernandez is president and CEO of the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce. He graduated with Honors from Southwest Texas State University, received Economic Development training from Texas A&M University-College Station, and graduated with Honors (Innovation 88) from the University of Texas-Austin LBJ School of Public Affairs. Hernandez served in the U.S. Army, as a Board Regent for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organizational Management program, a Vice President of Communications for the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives, and as a Board Member for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. He currently serves as a Board Member of the Center for Community Engagement at Sam Houston State University.

Walker County Hospital District Director - Vice Chair

Joe Sapp is a director of the Walker County Hospital District (WCHD) Board of Managers and serves as the WCHD representative on the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Born and raised in Conroe, Texas, Sapp received his undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Texas. He completed his residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Harris Hospital. Sapp holds 49 years of experience in the field. He worked 13 years in retail pharmacy before serving 23 years as the Director of Pharmacy at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. He also spent 12 years with UTMB Correctional Managed Care Pharmacy. Sapp is a graduate of the Huntsville Leadership Institute. He also served as a past board member of the City of Huntsville Board of Adjustments and Appeals, and on the board of the local chapter of the American Heart Association.

Sudhir Sehgal, MD currently serves as Medical Chief of Staff for Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Dr. Sehgal established his practice in Huntsville in 2009 as a full-time Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine consultant. Dr. Sehgal received his medical degree from Seth G.S Medical School in Bombay, India in 1996. He attended Internal Medicine residency program at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois; followed by, fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Sehgal is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine. He also serves as the medical director of Huntsville Memorial Hospital ICU and Cardio Pulmonary Rehab.

Joe Thomason is Community Hospital Corporation’s (CHC) representative on the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Thomason is Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations for CHC. He Received a Bachelor of Business degree from West Texas State University. He then obtained a Master of Business Administration and Health Organization Management degree from Texas Tech University. Thomason has 30 years of experience in hospital operations and administration. He has served as a Chief Operating Officer for a Tenet Hospital in El Paso, Texas, Chief Executive Officer for Centennial Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and Chief Executive Officer of RHD Memorial Medical Center in Dallas, and Brownsville Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas.

Judy Upshaw serves as a Community Director on the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Upshaw received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Tyler Junior College. She then obtained both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. A registered nurse for the past 24 years, Upshaw has been Clinical Assistant Professor at Sam Houston State University School of Nursing since 2013. She serves as a committee member for the School of Nursing and the College of Health Sciences. Upshaw was hired by Huntsville Memorial Hospital as Director of the Correctional Care Unit when it opened in 2011. She also formerly served as a Board Member for the SAAFE House.

Trey Wharton serves as a Community Director on the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Raised in Huntsville, Texas, he has owned his own independent insurance agency since 1991. Wharton also serves as an Investment Advisor Representative. He attended Texas Christian University where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration. Wharton holds multiple licenses, including a Series 65 License, a Series 63 License, a Series 6 License, and a Life, Health, Property, and Casualty Insurance License. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for Huntsville Independent School District, and on the Board of Directors for the Huntsville Walker County Chamber of Commerce.

Trey Young M.D., raised in Huntsville, TX, is a local physician caring for both adults and children in the primary care setting.  Dr. Young graduated with honors from Texas A&M in Biomedical Engineering.  He received his Medical Degree in 2017 from The University of Texas in Houston. Following Medical School, he stayed at UT Houston to complete a combined residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.  He is now a dual board-certified physician, and has been practicing in Huntsville since 2021.
