Huntsville Memorial Hospital Celebrates Inaugural Class of Residents

Huntsville Memorial Hospital is proud to announce an important milestone as we warmly welcome the first class of four family practice residents, commencing their training on July 1st. This occasion signifies a significant step forward in our commitment to medical education and the provision of exceptional care to our community. With the commencement of this residency program, Huntsville Memorial Hospital underscores our ongoing commitment to providing excellent patient care delivered by a team of highly skilled professionals.

We are pleased to collaborate with the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) in launching the Family Medicine Residency program. This accreditation expands SHSU-COM’s graduate medical education offerings, providing an opportunity for aspiring physicians to gain invaluable experience at our hospital. The program is designed to grow and accommodate up to 12 residents, further enhancing our capacity to meet the community’s healthcare needs.

The Family Medicine Residency program sets the stage for future training programs sponsored by SHSU-COM, expanding our ability to fulfill the medical needs of Walker County. Led by Tucker Leigh, DO, medical director and assistant professor of Family Medicine, this program will empower residents with the necessary tools, education, and support to become proficient clinicians and patient advocates. Family Medicine physicians play a vital role in providing comprehensive healthcare, from preventive medicine to end-of-life care, and act as the primary point of contact for patients’ medical needs.

The establishment of a residency program in Huntsville brings numerous benefits to our community. Research indicates that physicians often choose to practice medicine in the communities where they complete their residency programs, fostering long-term relationships and promoting the overall well-being of the population. This residency program operates as a partnership between Huntsville Memorial Hospital and SHSU-COM, with the Huntsville Rural Health Clinic serving as the primary teaching venue. Our dedicated faculty, consisting of experienced primary care providers and clinical faculty from SHSU-COM, will guide and mentor residents throughout their training.

We are privileged to collaborate with SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, an esteemed institution of learning, as our community partner. Together, we look forward to shaping the future of healthcare by cultivating a new generation of compassionate and skilled physicians to benefit generations to come.
