Health Services For Women

Caring For Women

A women's health care needs are unique. From delivering a child to having an annual mammogram, a woman faces a myriad of health issues during her life. To help women meet their health care needs, Huntsville Memorial Hospital offers a number of services especially for women to address the diagnosis and treatment of women's health issues.

HMH has a nursing unit for female patients. The Women's Health Services (WHS) unit is located on the second floor of Huntsville Memorial Hospital, and features birthing suites, nursery and gynecology surgery recovery areas. Tastefully decorated, the unit is segregated from the rest of the hospital and is dedicated strictly to women.

  Child Birth

The Women's Health Service (WHS) unit features five private birthing suites, where mothers can labor, deliver and recover all in one room.

After the baby is born, your newborn will be taken to the nursery for examination and observation. From that point, your baby will remain in your room throughout the hospital stay. "Rooming-in" is required by the Nursing unit for the purpose of infant care education and maternal/family bonding. Perinatal nurses continually monitor mothers and babies during the hospitalization. Newborns return to the nursery only for lab tests and necessary medical care.

Hearing testing for all newborns was introduced at HMH several years ago and is conducted on all newborn babies. The Otoacoustic Emissions Testing (OAE) provides physicians with information concerning any possible hearing problems a newborn might have.

  Surgery Recovery

Specifically designed for obstetrical and gynecology surgical recovery, the WHS unit is staffed with professionals who deal with the medical and educational needs of female surgery. After surgery, patients who will be staying in the hospital are moved to a room in the Women's Unit, where their care continues.

  HMH Radiology's Mammography Suite

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women. Early detection promotes early cure. To that end, HMH Radiology features a full-service private Mammography Suite where women may receive a mammogram. Featuring a waiting area, dressing rooms and the latest in imaging equipment, the suite is staffed by certified technicians who can answer questions about the procedure. The Scenography DMR Mammography Unit consistently achieves the highest inspection and certification rating by the Division of Mammography Quality & Radiation Program of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
