Huntsville Memorial Hospital is here to help when you are sick or injured. Fortunately, you don't need us most of the time. But you do need your health for a happy life. And good health is partly up to you. The following health classes and programs are available to help you make the most of when you're well.
NUTRITION
Nutritional Counseling
Personal counseling for various disease recovery states as well as healthy lifestyle eating plans is available with a physician prescription. Call for information on obtaining prescriptions, insurance coverage questions and types of consultation.

Diabetes Self-Management Program
Diabetes is a serious disease that affects your entire body. But it can be controlled. HMH's Diabetes Self-Management Program teaches you how. It is an educational program that increases your knowledge so you - not your diabetes - are in charge of your life.
Whether you are newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for years, DSM can give you the self-management skills that translate into a higher quality of life.
After referral by your doctor, HMH's outpatient dietitian will develop an individual care plan. Your program will include a series of individual consultations. Reports of your progress will be sent to your physician on a regular basis.
DSM is a proven program that is taught by a qualified diabetes educator. It may be covered by your health insurance company and Medicare. Physician referral is preferred.

SCREENINGS
Cardiovascular Risk Profile
Simple finger prick screening which measures cholesterol, HDL, LDI, triglycerides and glucose as they relate to an individual's potential risk for heart disease and stroke. HMH's Cardiac Rehabilitation nurse will conduct the screenings as well as discuss results. Screening is by appointment only, Monday through Friday. The Cardiovascular Risk Profile is a screening test which is not covered by insurance or Medicare. A physician's order is not required.

Basic Health Screening
The combined results of a Cardiovascular Risk Profile and a Health Risk Appraisal questionnaire provide the participant an overview of their current heatlh condition. In addition to the finger prick blood sample, other measurements include blood pressure, weight and a comprehensive health risk appraisal questionnaire. Upon receiving an appointment time, participants are mailed the HRA for completeion prior to health screening tests. Results of the blood work are available upon testing and HRA results along with a complete personal report are returned within two weeks.
The Basic Health Screening is not covered by insurance or Medicare. A physician's order is not required.

SAFETY
American Red Cross CPR/First Aid
Nine hour American Red Cross certification course held over the course of two evenings. The first evening, participants are certified in adult, infant and child CPR. First aid skills are taught the second night.
Date: 4th Monday and Wednesday of each month, unless otherwise designated.
Time: 5:30 - 10:00 PM
Fee: $40/person; $30 for 1 class

AHA CPR For Health Care Providers
This American Heart Association course is directed at healthcare professionals and covers adult one-rescuer CPR, adult two-rescuer CPR, pediatric one-rescuer CPR and relief of foreign body airway obstruction.

AARP - 55 Alive Driving Course
Traffic safety experts and medical authorities agree that almost everyone beings to experience some marked physical changes around age 55 - and those changes affect the way we drive. The nation's first comprehensive driver retraining classroom course designed specifically to help drivers age 50 and over is now available through AARP and HMH Community Education. AARP membership is not required.

SafeSitter Babysitting Course
SafeSitter is a medically accurate instruction series that teaches boys and girls age 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children.
SafeSitters learn:
- Basic lifesaving techniques
- Safety precautions to prevent accidents
- How and when to summon help
- Tips on basic child care

HAVING A BABY?
Having a Baby?
If you're like most expectant parents, you have a number of questions about your pregnancy, your health, your baby's health, and more. Beginnings is a free educational program designed to give you the information you need to prepare for the big event and for the first year of your baby's life. To sign up for this program, call Mindy Oden, 291-4588.
1st STEP: Healthy Beginnings
Targeted to women in the first trimester, this information packet offers material about health and pregnancy as well as a number of coupons from area merchants.
2nd STEP: Maternity Reception
Expectant parents are invited to be our guest at the HMH Maternity Reception where you will meet and hear valuable information from the Nurse Director of Women's Health Services. Guests will also be treated to "Maternity Trivia" for dads and refreshments. Moms receive their "Beginnings at HMH" T-shirt following the reception.
3rd STEP: Lamaze/Prepared Childbirth
For expectant mothers in the third trimester, this program teaches a woman and her spouse what to expect in labor and delivery, including Caesarean section and Lamaze techniques.
4th STEP: Sibling Class
"I Love Our Baby" is designed for families expecting another child. With the use of realistic dolls, the siblings-to-be learn about basic baby techniques, including how to properly hold the newborn. Tours of the birthing suites and nursery are also included. Sibs receive a beginnings T-shirt and a photo with HMH's Winnie the Pooh.
5th STEP: Baby Care Workshop
A baby's health is vitally related to diet and food. This program will include general feeding practives, nutrient needs of babies and some special nutrition concerns. During this session, other main points concerning infant care will be covered, and expectant parents will receive "hands on" training with baby care techniques such as; bathing, feeding, and diapering.

6th STEP: Infant CPR
In a life threatening situation, you must act at once. It may be a matter of seconds before an infant suffers. In addition, most of these emergencies can be prevented by knowing and following safety rules. This four hour class teaches lifesaving skills for infants (Birth to one year) in a life situation. Participants will become certified in infant CPR and choking techniques.
7th STEP: Breastfeeding Class
This is a basic breastfeeding course for expectant parents. Many defferent topics are discussed such as positioning and latch on, benefits and myths of breastfeeding and the working mother, the use of breast pumps and much more.
Additional Programs During Pregnancy and Beyond
Pediatric CPR
In a breathing or cardiac emergency, children require care that is different from adults. And in a life-threatening emergency you must act quickly. It may only be a matter of seconds before a child or infant dies. Along with being aware of how to prevent childhood injuries, life saving skills like CPR and Rescue Coking is highly encouraged for parents and/or caregivers of young children.
"PCPR" focuses on CPR and choking techniques for infants and children up to 8 years of age, while the infant CPR focuses on CPR and choking techniques for the baby's 1st year of life only.
Prenatal/Postnatal Water Aerobics
HMH Beginnings in conjunction with Iron Works Health Club, is currently offering Water Aerobics for expectant mothers and for mothers who are postpartum. The class includes safe cardiovascular and toning exercises. The bouancy of the water is a refreshing break from the growing weight of the uterus and baby for pregnant mommy.
Breastfeeding Supplies and Services
In conjunction with our Breastfeeding Class and Lactation Services, Beginnings is pleased to add a line of supplies and services for breastfeeding moms in the Walker County area. A variety of supplies from ointments to make breastfeeding a pleasnt and successful experience for mom and baby.
SPEAKERS BUREAU
Speakers Bureau
Choose a speaker on a variety of health related topics. HMH staff will help you determine a topic of interest to your business, civic or religious group and plan the presentation from start to finish. A minimum of two weeks notice is required.

HEALTH RESOURCES
HMH Medical Library & Resource Center
The Medical Library serves as a resource center for the community, SHSU, HISD, nursing students and health care providers. Books, periodicals, film strips, and videos are available. In addition, computer linkage to major Texas universities and medical libraries provides expanded research capabilities.
In addition, the Resource Center provides customized information packets on disease and general health topics. Packets can be mailed free of charge or arranged by appointment. Books may be checked out for a two week period. Select videos are available for checkout.

Blood Drives
Give the gift of life! Blood drives are conducted by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center/Houston, and coordinated by the HMH Auxiliary and area churches. Reservations are not required.
